Hello! I’m Maryam, a 28-year-old creative enthusiast with a passion for the arts. About a decade ago, I found my faith in Jesus and it has since transformed my life in profound ways. By trade, I’m a freelancer in various creative fields—editing, photography, videography, and other media production endeavors. Creating has always been a core part of who I am, no matter the medium. Which is why I am working with a production company that aims to create content that is relatable and evangelistic. We hope to create content that inspires people to think about God and the big questions of life.
But alongside my artistic pursuits, I have also felt a deep empathy for the marginalized—those who are poor, lonely, and displaced. This compassion has only deepened since I came to know Jesus. His teachings have led me to reach out to prisons and homeless shelters and more recently, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to serve asylum seekers through my local church.
Since 2021, there’s been a significant increase in the number of asylum seekers and refugees arriving in England. This country, known for its robust social welfare system and democratic values, offers a safe haven for many. Those of us born here can be grateful for the stability and opportunities available to us. However, not everyone has had such privileges. While different cultures bring their own beauty and wisdom, the reality is not always glamorous for everyone.
Take Iran, for example. The situation there has deteriorated since the Islamic regime took power in 1970. Their rule is marred by what I can only describe as demonic cruelty—heresy, torture, sin, and a relentless hunger for power. The regime’s blatant disregard for human life has caused immense suffering among the Iranian people, who are just ordinary individuals yearning to live peaceful, fulfilling lives. With increasing political and religious threats, many have been forced to flee their homeland, facing even greater hardships due to international sanctions.
In the face of these dire circumstances, however, we see a glimmer of hope. Just like the early church in the Book of Acts, where persecution and famine led to the flourishing of faith, we are witnessing many Iranians turning to Jesus. Our community of believers and seekers, a mix of diverse individuals, gathers to share meals and support one another. For many asylum seekers housed in inadequate hotels, a warm meal alongside a real sense of family can bring a much-needed sense of home and comfort.
We also provide practical advice about living in the UK and connect people with helpful organizations and advisors. Amidst the challenges, we have witnessed miracles, answered prayers, and incredible testimonies. People are experiencing the love of Jesus for the first time, finding forgiveness, belonging, healing, and unity. We’ve seen lives transformed through the power of faith and community.
Nevertheless, the journey is not without its difficulties. The problems faced by asylum seekers are far from ordinary, and as leaders, we are often tempted to be overwhelmed by the weight of these issues. It’s easy to feel as though we can save everyone, but the truth is, we can’t. We must help where we can and leave the rest to God. This path requires a willingness to be shaped, to remain joyful in the face of great need, and to show kindness in the midst of neglect and disregard.
In serving others, we also allow Jesus to disciple us, guiding us to be better followers as we help others find their way. It’s a humbling and transformative journey, one that I am grateful to be a part of every day.
